Swearing Help's!

Scientists say people swear when they hurt themselves because it actually reduces the pain.

A study by researchers at Keele University found volunteers were able to withstand pain for longer when they swore.

Dr Richard Stephens, who led the study, believes it may explain why swearing is common in languages all over the world.

"Swearing is quite an emotional form of language and it is an almost universal human linguistic phenomenon," he said.

"When my wife was in labour with our daughter she felt the need to f and blind at one point, but was very apologetic afterwards. The midwife said they were used to that kind of language on the delivery ward, so it got me thinking.

"Our research shows one potential reason why swearing has developed and why it persists."

The researchers, whose findings are published in the journal NeuroReport, tested 64 students' tolerance to pain by asking them to submerge their hand in a tub of ice water for as long as they could while repeating a series of swear words of their choice.

They were then asked to carry out the task again while repeating non-offensive words they would use to describe a table.

They found that volunteers who swore were able to keep their hands submerged in the water for an average of 40 seconds longer. They also rated their pain lower.

Woman Shot On Toilet!

A woman was shot on a hotel toilet in Florida - by a bullet which fired when the woman in the next cubicle dropped her gun.

Janifer Bliss, 53, was hit in the lower left leg and taken to Tampa General Hospital with minor injuries, reports the Tampa Tribune.

Police said the woman in the next stall accidentally let her handgun slip out of her waist holster, and the weapon discharged when it hit the ground.

Police said the gun belonged to a 56-year-old woman who has a concealed weapons permit.

The case has been referred to the State Attorney's Office to determine if any charges will be filed.

Bruno banned from text book!!

Politically correct German education officials have ordered a character called Bruno in a new children's book to be renamed Aydan.

Officials in Hamburg were reportedly unhappy at having a character with the same name as Sacha Baron Cohen's Nazi-praising Austrian journalist Bruno.

They also wanted something that would not offend the Muslim community, and so chose the Turkish name Aydan.

They have also demanded that more Muslim characters be put in and that women have equal character status as men in the stories and said that disabled people must also feature in the book.

The book, The Adventures of Aydan, is described as "an attempt to bring dull topics such as politics and democracy closer to kids".

A local council spokesman said: "We want this book to appeal to as many people as possible and be as accessible as possible as the themes and subjects.

Man returns library book - after 46 years!!

A Derby man has taken advantage of a library amnesty - to return a book he borrowed in 1963.

David Hall borrowed the book, Engineering Workshop Practice, for his father from Derby Central Library, reports the BBC.

He could have faced a fine of £2,500 for returning the book 46 years late had it not been for the amnesty.

Mr Hall was 10 when he took the book out.

He said: "I found the book when I was clearing my dad's loft after he died 20 years ago.

"I noticed it was the same one I borrowed all those years ago and I thought 'perhaps that should go back to the library'. Then I noticed the amnesty and thought, what a great opportunity."

The amnesty, organised by Derby City Libraries, lasts until Wednesday and anyone who has an overdue book on loan can hand it in at any library without being penalised.

Look - No Hands!

A motorcyclist received a caution from police officers in China - for riding with no arms.

Officers in Jimo, Shandong province stopped the motorcycle for being overloaded - but were shocked when they saw the driver, reports the Qilu Evening Post.

Liu, 27, lost both arms at the age of seven after an electric shock. When he was 10, his parents sent him to a local circus to learn skills, and from then on, he trained himself to ride a motorcycle without arms.

Police officer Xhang Jie said: "I spotted from a distance that the motorbike had three adults on but we were all stunned by what we saw when we got closer."

Liu admitted that he had been riding his adapted motorcycle for 10 years without arms - and he didn't even have a license.

He said the circus where he worked had closed down three years ago and he and two other disabled circus workers had been performing on the streets ever since.

Police decided against fining him because he didn't have any money but issued him a serious warning. Liu promised them he would not ride motorbikes again.

Liverpool!!

So, I finally made it across the water for a bit of a break. I'm not allowed to fly because I have a brain injury so getting over was a bit of a nightmare.. But made it none the less! Been having good weather thankfully and wandering around and basically talking the ears off my 2nd family!

Check out the pic of my mate Stephen wearing his inspector Frost hat! :)

Petrol Head Granny Does 108mph!!

A 106-year-old Kent woman has become the oldest person to complete a lap at Brands Hatch.

Dulcibella King-Hall notched up a top speed of 108mph in a BMW M3 to celebrate her upcoming 107th birthday.

Miss King-Hall, of Tunbridge Wells, declared: "It could have been faster", as she was helped back into her wheelchair after completing four laps as a passenger.

Asked why she loved the thrill of speed, she replied: "Why shouldn't I? Don't you like it? I like the feeling of the vehicle going vroom."

Born in Devon in 1902, Miss King-Hall has loved cars since she tested vehicles commandeered from civilian use during the Second World War.

Pulling into the pit stop after three laps, Miss King-Hall sped off for a final loop of the circuit watched by a crowd of awestruck well-wishers.

Driver, chief instructor Gary Palmer, 39, said: "I said: 'Shall we do another lap?' and she said 'yes'. It's incredible. We don't normally see people of that age on the track."

Lena Akers, social events coordinator at the Halliwell nursing home where she lives, organised a trip in a Porsche for Miss King-Hall's 100th birthday, then a drive in a Rolls-Royce when she turned 105.

She said she felt she had to "up the ante" this year, adding: "Cars are an abiding passion of Dulcibella's. Her love of speed has her constantly asking our minibus driver 'to go a little faster please'.

"If you have a lady who loves speed, I couldn't think of anywhere else better to come than Brands Hatch."

You know you grew up in Ireland in the 90s when...

1. You remember exactly where you where, who you were with and what you were wearing for THAT penalty. You even remember George Hamiltons commentary, 'A nation holds it's breath.' You possibly have a son named after Kevin Sheedy.

2. You liked Oasis or Blur. But not both, because that 'wasn't allowed'. Tipping your two heels confirmed it was not allowed.

3. You had a Megadrive or SNES. But not both, because that 'wasn't allowed' either.

4. You've only just turned thirty yet your doctor tells you that you have the wrists of a severely arthritic eighty year old thanks to days spent in the arcade on Street Fighter.

5. You had a crush on the youngest girl in Hanson.

6. MTV played music.

7. 'Talk to the hand coz the face ain't listenin' was an acceptable response to any question. As was 'it's a free country'. Finish off with 'Word to your mother'.

8. You have the complete series of Father Ted.

9. You had 'The Rachel' hairstyle if you were female, or one of many 'Beckhams' if you were male.

10. You can quote Pulp Fiction start to finish, you know who Kaiser Sosa is, and secretly Toy Story made it into your Top 5 films of all time.

11. Your old enough to recall a time when Boxing had a division called 'Heavyweight' and it was worth sitting up till four in the morning to watch.

12. You started to watch Tennis. Can't say I recall why.

13. Talk shows controlled TV. Ricki Lake , Sally Jessie, Geraldo, Oprah and of course.

14. You could wear your clothes back to front if you wished and it was 'cool' thanks to Kris Kross. 'Daddy Mac'll make ya Jump, Jump.'

15. You owned (or still own) any of the following: A carpet jacket, X-works jeans, eclipse jeans and/or a bubble jacket. For the female, you wore leggings/cycling shorts with long t-shirts and most likely had a pen pal.

16. You owned a pair of Air-Max and/or Puma discs.

17. 20p got you far in the shop. 10p for a Mr. Frosty cool-pop (a Snow-time optional), a 5p packet of A-team crisps, two fruit salads, two apple jacks and a postman pat.

18. Your breath smelled of Frosties.

19. Bryan Adams was number one for about four years.

20. Helen Daniels was alive and well in Neighbours. As was Percy Sugden in Coronation Street

21. Saturday evening TV was worth watching: Catchphrase, Gladiators, Baywatch, Generation Game, You Bet, Big Break, Noels House Party and then Casualty. And shame on you, the answers 'holding down a job'.

22. You remember Sports Saturday on RTE, and now you're humming the tune of 'The Final Countdown'.

23. Your attic has a stash of old Shoot & Match Magazines. Or Smash Hits if you were that way inclined.

24. Sharkie & George were the crimebusters of the sea.

25. You still call Ant & Dec by PJ & Duncan.

26. You know the dance moves to Whigfields Saturday Night and the Macarena. You firmly believe Scatman John did a lot for the music industry.

27. Chris Evans was 'a madser'.

28. You want 'Rhythm is a Dancer' played at your funeral.

29. Your first mobile phone required you to carry around a backpack and your number is still 088.

30. You got your first DVD player.

31. You miss Sunday nights and 'Strike it Lucky' with Michael Barrymore, when he was straight & married.

32. Beverly Hills 90210 was reality TV. You watched California Dreaming, Pugwall & you know the theme tune to 'Saved by the Bell '. You're singing it now.

33. You know what ALF stands for. And you've just realised how scarily he looks like that old guy who hosts the Rugby on RTE. Not George Hook, the other one.

34. A Snickers was a Marathon , Starbursts were Opal Fruits and you never did get your hands on them Lucky Charms.

35. You had to walk around and find your friends by yourself. You couldn't just text or ring them.

36. You wore a 'F*ck Schillaci' T-Shirt.

37. If you're a bloke, you secretly liked Take That. If you're a girl, you loved them. Either way, you cried when they broke up.

38. If you preferred East 17 you were 'a knacker'.

39. You camped out your back garden during the summer and had water fights because water was free.

40. You drank 'hooch' in the park.

41. You poured out some 'hooch' in the park when Biggie & Tupac died.

42. Mr. Motivator helped your mother loose five pounds.

43. Mr. Kipling helped her find it again.

44. Owning a CD player classed you as 'Posh'.

45. You remember when Victoria Beckham was just the skinny Spice Girl who never sings.

46. The names Paula, Charlo and John Paul could be used to slag off any dysfunctional family in your estate.

47. You played Pogs. For Keepsies.

48. Ireland won the Eurovision every year.

49. You cheered on Michelle Smith in Atlanta

50. And you are of the opinion she couldn't have been lying, because swearing on a loved ones life without crossing any part of your body was a guarantee you were telling the truth.

Taking The Piss!!

New fizzy drink - made from cow urine!

India's Hindu nationalist movement says it is in the final stages of developing a new soft drink made from cow urine.

The Cow Protection Department of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, India's biggest and oldest Hindu nationalist group, is behind the new brew, reports The Times.

Department head Om Prakash said the drink - called "gau jal" or "cow water" - was undergoing lab tests and would be launched "very soon, maybe by the end of this year".

"Don't worry, it won't smell like urine and will be tasty too," he said. "Its USP will be that it's going to be very healthy. It won't be like carbonated drinks and would be devoid of any toxins."

Mr Prakash said his drink was made mainly of cow urine, mixed with herbs, and would be "cheap", but declined to give further details until it was officially launched.

He insisted, however, that it would be able to compete with the likes of Coca Cola and Pepsi.

"We're going to give them good competition as our drink is good for mankind," he said. "We may also think of exporting it."

The drink is the latest attempt by the RSS to cleanse India of foreign influence and promote its Hindu ideology.

Hindus revere cows and slaughtering them is illegal in most of India. The RSS claims cow urine can cure ailments ranging from liver disease to obesity and even cancer.

The movement organised a nationwide boycott of multinational consumer goods, including Pepsi and Coca Cola, in 1994.

Seeing Double...

Twin brothers arrested on suspicion of stealing £5.6m of jewellery and watches in Berlin have been released because police can't prove which one did it.

The 27-year-olds had been accused of the daring heist at Europe's largest department store - KaDeWe, reports the Daily Telegraph.

The robbers are thought to have abseiled into the shop through a skylight after scaling the side of the building.

A court statement read: "From the evidence we have, we can deduce that at least one of the brothers took part in the crime but it has not been possible to determine which one."

The brothers, from Lower Saxony, were arrested two weeks after the incident, but because their genetic information is so similar, traces of DNA found at the scene of the crime did not provide conclusive evidence.

Investigations are still under way, the court said.

.

Salami... 'It's a bit of an animal'

A Romanian man was shocked to find a dead mouse inside a salami sausage he was eating.

Nelu Luca, from Iasi, had eaten almost half of the vacuum-packed salami before he spotted the mouse.

He said: "I couldn't believe it. I'm always careful with what I buy but the salami looked perfectly fine from the outside. But in the middle there was a dead mouse."

Manufacturers Tabco Campofrio Romania, based in Tulcea, now face a fine of up to £1,000.

Valerian Salvastru, head of consumer protection in Iasi, said: "We took samples from the salami and sent them to the lab to see if there was a health risk. We are continuing our investigations."

Ovidiu Wencz, manager of the company which produced the salami, blamed saboteurs and believes somebody must have deliberately put the mouse in the salami mixture.

He said in the past they had found screws and nuts in their salami but solved that problem by installing magnets.

Something Fishy Going On...

Pet shop receives coffin instead of fish!!

Staff at a Philadelphia pet shop expecting a shipment of tropical fish were shocked to receive a dead body instead.

Mark Arabia, owner of Pets Pus, found the coffin when he went out to the delivery man's vehicle to collect the $1,000 fish delivery.

"At first when I looked at it, I said, 'Fish never come this way'," he said.

He eventually learned the body inside was that of a 65-year-old man from San Diego, California.

It was supposed to go to a laboratory in Allentown, Pennsylvania, but there was an "unfortunate mix-up" at Philadelphia airport, said US Airways.

The airline, which had brought the body from California, said the problem was caused by a "verbal miscommunication between a delivery driver and the cargo representative", adding that it was "deeply sorry".

"I think it's horrible. You can mess up, give us wrong stuff, wrong boxes. I guess this is how they treat bodies at the airport, which is a shame," said Mr Arabia.

"If it was my family member, I'd really be broken up."
.

Speeding driver raced home to bid on eBay!!

A US motorist pulled up for speeding at 110mph told police he was racing home to catch the end of an eBay auction.

Police say the man didn't say what he was bidding on but his car was full of Star Wars action figures, reports the Seattle Times.

James Garrett, of Fall City, near Seattle, was pulled over by police as he raced through Mount Baker Tunnel on Interstate 90.

He reportedly told a state trooper that he had to get home as he was late bidding on a coveted item and eBay was about to close the auction.

Trooper Dan McDonald said Garrett "didn't say what he was bidding on but the trooper said his car was filled with Star Wars stuff."

His car was impounded, with his Star Wars collectibles inside, and he was arrested on suspicion of reckless driving.
.

Hen adopts puppies!!

A hen in China has reportedly adopted two orphaned puppy dogs after their mother died.

Owner Cao Fengying, of Majiaqiao village, Jiashan town, says the hen was best friends with the puppy's mother.

But the dog was poisoned just ten days after giving birth to puppies, reports Today Morning.

Cao said: "The hen and the dog had been friends for two years. They would never fight but just play together.

"I thought the puppies would die after their mother went but the next morning I discovered that the puppies had gone missing.

"Then I heard the hen clucking in her coop. I looked over and saw that the little puppies were underneath the hen."

The hen now looks after her adopted children, defending them if anyone approaches and letting them eat first at meal times.

"Once I even saw the hen fight off several other chickens which were trying to steal the puppies' food," added Cao.

Villagers say they can't understand why a hen would be so protective of two puppies - but Cao believes she is simply doing right by her late friend.
